about

“Wait a sec.. you’re not Woodhead…”
Sadly, Woodhead and S2 were separated at birth and sent to opposite sides of the country to live their lives. But the story doesn’t end there. January 2013 in East Vancouver brought these 2 heavyweight look-alikes back together. 50 rainy day commutes and a few thousand private messages later emerges “Voices“. The debut album from Clyphs. The word versatility comes to mind, with the title track standing on its own from the rest of the up-tempo, deep house and garage inspired selections.
“Make It Better” starts us off with a swirling melody, loose feel, and a snare drum that just may have broken right through its skin. Dancefloors are guaranteed to get silly off this one, early or late night. The vocal told Clyphs to “make it better”, and the world just might be a better place with this tune bouncing through your local subs.
“Voices” juggles percussion, bells and “voices” in a soul-inspired 75 bpm sub-focused boomer. Genre-less and boundless, this track is pure aphrodesiac. Dim the lights. It is rumored their vocalist had a very late night before this recording was taken.
Houle Sound remixes “Make it Better” and just may have taken that vocal to heart. Tight, bouncy and slapping, you will be hard pressed to put a genre on this one. It seems every chord, clap and pitch-bent squeak couldn’t stand alone, but complement eachother in a groove previously unknown in this particular solar system.
“Out Front” is out there. Jah have mercy on us all, the analog stomp on this track is unmatched. The moment you feel the track fall apart is the moment you can prepare yourself for a minimal but full drop of reverb door-knocks and a kick-sub from about 8 millenia into the future. Full release. Happy ending. This is what i wanted to do.
“Let It Go” brings through a proper garage bass sound, another slapping snap-clap, and a late vocal build that turns the track into 2 separate voyages. The fastest track on the album at 134 bpm, theres room for improvement. On your dancefloor! Drop this and questions will arise. Sing along. Clap along. Just “let it go”.
Happy dancefloors, this is your time. “Body Move” is a minimal, funky selection with just enough sex in the vocal to please any listener. Stiff, funky and in your face, the most patient track on the album, you need this one on your mix.
Depth. How else can one explain Ma’ams “Make it Better” remix without hearing it? If you can find a conga-snare combo smoother than this one, i have a diamond ring and a proposal for you. And the bass, you ask? Wait for it, wait for it, there you go. Your deep house arsenal has just been completed. Thank you, Ma’am. Bam!
Sometimes things go wrong. “Things go Wrong” fell in the dryer, it was broken to pieces, dehydrated and generally just beat up. Clyphs pulled it out, dusted it off and glued it back together. Be careful with this one. Its fragile.
“Out Front” Shambhala edit. To finish the album off, Clyphs decided to make a mash-up of 2 of their own tunes. Cocky bastards. This tune was featured on Shambhala Music Festivals promo video this year and has been heard a LOT. It’s sitting deep in your crowds psyche, just waiting for you to pull it back out and ring some peoples bells. Dark and beautiful, the confused stepchild of “Out Front” and “Body Move”.
